Congratulations Dr. Matthew Cecchini

Congratulations Dr. Matthew Cecchini on receiving the OMA Resident Achievement Award. The Resident Achievement Award is awarded for outstanding contribution to the advancement of post-graduate training.

Dr. Matthew Cecchini is a 5th year anatomical pathology resident at Western University. He was raised in Thorold, Ontario and he completed his undergraduate studies in Honours Biotechnology at Brock University. Following this, he completed the MD/PhD training program at Western University under the supervision of Dr. Fred Dick where he studied the molecular basis of key tumor suppressor pathways. Dr. Cecchini is actively involved in research with 30 peer reviewed publications and has studied biomarkers in both lung and colon cancer to provide prognostic information and guide treatment decisions for patients. He has received a grant from the Physicians' Services Incorporated Foundation to fund his work in colon cancer. Dr. Cecchini is also passionate about pathology education and has developed educational initiatives for both 3rd year medical students and the Department of Oncology at Western. Dr. Cecchini was part of the Canadian Association of Pathologists annual meeting planning committee where he developed an essential skills workshop for pathology trainees and a networking lunch to optimize employment and fellowship opportunities in Canada. He was recognized for this work with the Annual Meeting Chair’s Award in 2017 and 2018. Dr. Cecchini is active on social media and has been an invited speaker at the national pathology meeting to present on the use of social media in Pathology. Dr. Cecchini will be completing a fellowship in Pulmonary Pathology at the Mayo Clinic starting in July 2019.
