The combined Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic Adult and Paediatric Orthopaedics Spine Fellowship provides a comprehensive exposure to the non-operative and operative care of children, adolescents, adults, and elderly with spinal pathology.
The program is situated in the connected buildings of Victoria Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Western Ontario which are adjacent to the Regional Cancer Centre and Parkwood Hospital (housing the regional spinal cord injury rehabilitation program).
The spine fellow is an integral member of the spine program, which provides elective and emergency orthopaedic spinal care. The fellow will be involved in the management of spinal referrals from the regional level one trauma centre and regional cancer program. The spine fellow will have the opportunity to attend a monthly multi-disciplinary clinic at the spinal cord rehabilitation program.
  • The one-year fellowship is organized to provide an approximate exposure of 25% pediatric and 75% adult spinal care. However, this can be tailored to meet the educational needs of the fellow.
  • The pediatric/adolescent spinal care exposure includes mostly deformity (idiopathic, congenital, and neuromuscular) and trauma.
  • The adult spinal care exposure includes approximately 20% tumour and complex deformity, 50% degenerative, and 30% trauma.
  • The fellow will become proficient in a variety of current surgical decompressive and reconstructive techniques in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, including some exposure to motion sparing and minimal access techniques.

Fellows work alongside residents and medical students from Western University. They will attend m/m and indication rounds, spine research rounds, resident spine teaching seminars, and orthopaedic grand rounds which all occur on a regular basis (weekly in most cases). Fellows are invited to a quarter annual multi-disciplinary spine journal club. The fellow is expected to complete one research paper (clinical or basic science) to be published and presented at a national or international spine meeting.
