Why did you decide to pursue medical school?

I’ve always been interested in science and medicine, but I think that my experience as a patient is what pushed me to pursue my MD. Being diagnosed with scoliosis at a young age resulted in early and consistent exposure to the medical field and the role physicians play within it, sparking my interest in a medical career.

I also wanted a job that would continually evolve and challenge me, which medicine provides by offering the opportunity to effect positive change both personally for patients and systemically through research, allowing me to combine my passions, interests, and experiences.

What was your academic or life journey to applying to medical school?

In high school, I saw attending university as a possibility in my very distant future. I trained as a professional dancer for 5-6 hours each day, and though I had always enjoyed school, it wasn’t as much of a focus for me during this time. I enjoyed the mental and physical challenge of professional ballet school, which taught me to perform under pressure, and respond constructively to feedback in order to improve consistently and keep my spot in the program. However, as I approached graduation, my growing interest in pursuing further education won out, and I started my undergrad degree.

What has your experiential learning been like thus far?

Experiential learning has been a huge highlight of my first year! Having opportunities to observe procedures in the OR, participate in research, and learn from my family medicine preceptor have provided a lot of motivation, and been extremely valuable in informing my professional interests and goals.

As an out-of-province student, I’ve also really enjoyed having the opportunity to become more involved in the community through my service learning placement, where I’ve been able to continue tutoring.

What is your favourite local attraction, activity or restaurant?

Spageddy Eddy’s!! A unique London hole-in-the-wall that serves huge bowls of pasta and has a cute, cozy atmosphere.

What is a fun fact about yourself?

Once I got my toe stung by a stingray :(
