Q&A with Pearl

"Upon arriving in Canada, I harbored a strong ambition to become a licensed dentist, yet lacked proper guidance due to my unfamiliarity with anyone in the field.

Recognizing that many students face similar hurdles, I am motivated to assist them in taking a step closer to their dream."

What was your academic or life journey to applying to dental school?

I'm an internationally trained dentist, with a bachelor's degree from India. After a year of general dentistry practice, my passion for surgery grew. Driven by the high prevalence of periodontitis in India, I decided to pursue a master's degree in Periodontics. Post-graduation, I worked as a clinical director and assistant professor, but my thirst for knowledge persisted.

In 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, I relocated to Toronto. There, I juggled multiple shifts while dedicating weekends to studying. Driven by a desire for meticulous learning, I began my dental journey in Canada. Fortunately, I was accepted into my dream school, Schulich Dentistry, fulfilling a long-held aspiration.

What do you love about Schulich Dentistry?

I absolutely love Schulich Dentistry!! The faculty are so approachable with just 1:7 ratio, they create a friendly, fun-filled learning experience. The students and faculty provide a sense of close-knit community, my family away from family. The clinical cases along with their open discussions in classrooms are something I look forward to each day.  Schulich Dentistry is the perfect amalgamation of reputation, resources, friendly faculty, community and opportunities for clinical experience.

What organizations or extracurricular activities are you involved in through dental school?

I am member of the Schulich Multicultural Committee and volunteered for a Diwali function which hosted over 150 students and faculty. I am also a member of DocsKids, a student run outreach program which gives dental students opportunity to create awareness regarding oral health amongst children.

In my leisure time, I love to swim and bike on trails, in fact I even bike to School everyday.  I am a learned dancer and a free time artist.

Why did you become a Student Ambassador?

Upon arriving in Canada, I harbored a strong ambition to become a licensed dentist, yet lacked proper guidance due to my unfamiliarity with anyone in the field. As a result, my only resources were websites and YouTube. I encountered numerous challenges in seeking accurate guidance and it was time consuming. Recognizing that many students face similar hurdles, I am motivated to assist them in taking a step closer to their dream.

What is a fun fact about yourself?

I am a dancer, I have been learning to dance since the age of 5 and have participated in and won multiple dance competition.

Who do you admire and why?

I hold my father in high regards, he is generous, self-made individual who prioritizes health and stays active at 63.
