Q&A with Divya

“Becoming a Student Ambassador was motivated by my initial struggle with the application process, where I felt isolated because I didn’t know many upper-year students to ask for help. Recognizing the critical role of mentorship, I sought to bridge this gap for incoming applicants.”

Why did you decide to pursue dental school?

I realized I want to be a dentist because it provides me with the privilege of enhancing one of the most conspicuous and precious features of an individual’s appearance — one’s smile. Dentists also take a holistic approach to patient care; it’s not just about teeth, it’s about managing emotions and mental health conditions of patients, combining creative license and scientific principles to enhance oral health. As a dentist, I will also have the privilege to develop meaningful lifelong relationships with patients and their families, filling me with a feeling of immense joy and fulfillment.

What do you love about Schulich Dentistry?

I love the vibrant student community, characterized by academic rigor and enriched by close-knit relationships with professors. The environment fosters both personal and professional growth, encouraging deep engagement with our studies. The school clinic offers invaluable clinical experience, allowing us to apply our knowledge practically and gain confidence in our skills. Moreover, the international opportunities broaden our perspectives, exposing us to diverse healthcare systems and practices. The School’s commitment to comprehensive education, supported by a supportive community and extensive hands-on experiences, truly sets it apart.

Why did you become a Student Ambassador?

Becoming a Student Ambassador was motivated by my initial struggle with the application process, where I felt isolated because I didn’t know many upper-year students to ask for help. Recognizing the critical role of mentorship, I sought to bridge this gap for incoming applicants. My goal was to offer the support and encouragement I lacked, becoming a reliable guide and source of inspiration. This role enables me to empower new students, helping them navigate their educational journey with greater ease and confidence, ensuring they feel supported and connected from the start.

What is your favourite local attraction, activity or restaurant?

Gibbons Park in the North end of London is very pretty during the fall and spring months to go for a walk/run/catch the sunset. Port Stanley and Grand Bend are two beaches that are also close to London (45 mins to 1 hour commute), which are really nice during the warmer months to explore with friends! For local restaurants, Richmond Street has a variety of different cuisines to scout out!

Do you have a personal motto or favourite quote?

“It’s okay to fail, but don’t accept failure!’ There will be times where you will feel tested, but don’t give up! Professors, friends, and upper year mentors will be there to help you when you’re struggling, just keep going!

What is your advice for prospective applicants?

To see if dentistry is your calling, dental shadowing is helpful. Have a curious mindset, ask questions, and learn more about their day-to-day life. Also, engage in extracurricular activities like clubs, volunteering, and jobs that help you hone critical thinking, empathy, problem-solving, creativity, resilience, and hand-dexterity. It’s really important to do activities that you truly find enjoyable so that you don’t burn out. Lastly, DESTRESS!! At the end of the day, you will be working hard to achieve your career goals. It’s definitely a marathon with many valleys and mountains, but it will all work out in the end.
