A wealth of resources
With a crisp chill in the air, it’s hard to believe we are already thinking of assessments and wrapping up the first term. One of the themes that is constant in the Learner Equity & Wellness (LEW) Office is change. One of the more significant challenges within medical training is that change is not only constant, but it comes rapidly. Change is among the largest stressors within medical training - the idea that as soon as you get your feet on solid ground in one specialty, you’re off to a new specialty. Not to mention the outside factors that can add stress and manifest in performance.
Self-help, balance and self-care are all things we talk about. Putting them in action can be a lot harder. We are in an era within education where attention to mental health is at the forefront. The Student Counselling Centre at the University of Windsor does a great job in supporting Windsor Campus learners.
With time at a premium, taking advantage of resources is something that winds up last on the list, but with the convenience of being on campus or online, students will hopefully take steps to incorporate these services into their wellness routines.
One-to-One Counselling – Students can take advantage of meetings with a trained therapist experienced in many different styles of therapy. It is important that students understand that intake papers must be completed, as well as new client info on the website reviewed.
Group Counselling – Group counselling is available and centred around some of the most common challenges students face: anxiety and/or depression, stress and managing emotions.
Immediate Relief - For more accessible relief, there are a number of online tools promoted via the student counselling website. As well, there is a listing of available 24-hour support that students can access.
Community Resources – The Student Counselling Centre's website also lists local organizations that target specific mental health issues.
Wellness Resource Sheet – A quick reference to mental health resources on campus and in the community, which includes 24-hour resources. This is available online or printed copies can also be picked up in the LEW Office.
Medical learners are acknowledged by the Ontario Medical Association and, as such, can access the Physician Health Program which includes a range of direct services.
LEW is available as a first step to help connect students to these resources. Appointments for one-to-one support can be made with the LEW Office and walk-ins are always welcomed and encouraged.
We wish everyone best of luck in their end of term exams, as well as a wonderful, relaxing holiday break.
