Academic Role Categories
Academic Role Categories (ARCs) were originally developed in 2009 based on the definition of scholarship by Boyer and help faculty members understand how their professional time should be spent. Each clinical faculty member will be assigned to one of five categories: Clinician Teacher, Clinician Educator, Clinician Researcher, Clinician Scientist and Clinician Administrator.
Faculty time is divided into time spent in clinical activity, teaching, research, administration and leadership activities. Each ARC will specify the amount of time spent in each area. Additionally, the ARC outlines both expectations for performance as well as indicators of success. These achievement of these expectations are reviewed during the annual Career Development Planning process.
