More than 280 high school students and teachers from 45 schools across London, Southwestern Ontario, Mississauga and Oakville converged on Western University to explore careers in medicine and other health sciences.
Co-hosted by Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame, students heard from award-winning faculty members, and took part in interactive workshops demonstrating real-world medical skills as part of Discovery Day 2024.
Dean Dr. John Yoo told the students Schulich Medicine & Dentistry was the first School to partner with CMHF when the youth event began in May 1997.
“One day, one of you could be a Canadian Medical Hall of Fame inductee, and it all begins here, with a curiosity about health sciences and medicine,” Yoo told the students. “This is a tremendous opportunity to immerse yourself in this world, to ask questions and learn alongside our world-leading faculty and researchers. We are so pleased to partner with CMHF to be a part of your journey.”
Encouraging youth to pursue a career in the health field is vital to everyone’s life, Lissa Foster, Executive Director of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame, told the students.
“Improving human health in Canada and around the world is vital to everyone’s lives – and encouraging our youth to choose a career in a field where they can do this is equally vital,” said Foster. “More than 85 per cent of students who participate in this program across the country tell us this day helped them to solidify their plans to pursue a career in the health sciences, often helping them to identify a specific area of focus.”
Discovery Day is free to high school students thanks to program sponsors Canadian Medical Association, MD Financial Management, Scotiabank and Provincial Sponsor, Lerners LLP.
