Thousands of hours of coordinated effort over an entire year. Hundreds of students, staff, faculty and leaders from the MD Program in London and Windsor.

A huge goal: To build on the extraordinary reputation of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry’s MD Program through a successful accreditation outcome.

And now, one BIG thank you!

The Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) voted to continue accreditation for Schulich Medicine & Dentistry’s MD Program for the maximum term of eight years. The highly successful outcome was the result of the unparalleled engagement and outstanding efforts of the School’s community, said Dr. Shannon Venance, vice dean of Undergraduate Medical Education.

“The success of the accreditation reflects the outstanding efforts of our entire community in ensuring an exceptional educational experience for learners,” said Venance. “My sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to this extraordinary effort in all phases of the process – from data collection, the self-study component and the site visit. I’m so proud of everyone who took part.”

The process began in spring 2022, when the School’s MD program began the accreditation process for the first time in eight years.

Accreditation – which is a process all Canadian medical schools participate in – provides a critical opportunity to reflect on, and improve, the quality of medical education. It involves detailed assessments of the program’s curriculum, faculty qualifications, research opportunities, student services and clinical training facilities.

While the accreditor’s report was highly favourable, Venance said it also identifies a handful of areas where there is room to improve.

“This work is vital in our pursuit of educational excellence for our students – we can’t learn and grow if we don’t reflect and evaluate ourselves,” said Venance. “This report gives us a clear focus for future improvements.”

Accreditation is also an opportunity to continue building Schulich’s reputation and credibility as an institution that adheres to the highest standards for learning, she said.

“Our successful outcome in this process is one of the most critical in terms of its impact on our School,” she said, adding it opens doors to greater opportunities for talent recruitment, research funding, partnerships and collaborations with other prestigious institutions.

The MD program team will provide an updated status report to CACMS in two years.
