I am pleased to announce that Dr. Cheryl Currie has been appointed as the Director of the Interfaculty Program in Public Health at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, effective September 1, 2024, to August 31, 2029.

Dr. Currie joins us from the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, where she has held a faculty position for the past 12 years.

At the University of Lethbridge, Dr. Currie was instrumental in leading the development of the MSc Public Health program from 2018 to 2021. The program included an MSc specialization and two graduate certificates.

Dr. Currie graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Psychology in 1995, followed by a Master of Science from the Faculty of Human Ecology from the University of Manitoba in 2004. In 2012, she completed her PhD in Public Health from the University of Alberta.

As a social epidemiologist, Dr. Currie’s research interests focus on the social determinants of addiction, implementation science to address addiction problems in the community, Indigenous health and health equity. She is passionate about integrating examples from her research on the impacts of racism on health into her lectures and course assignments. Dr. Currie developed the first Indigenous health course at the University of Lethbridge and advocated for it to become a required component of the Public Health program.

I am honoured to welcome Dr. Currie to Schulich Medicine & Dentistry in her new role. I am also deeply thankful to Dr. Amardeep Thind for his exceptional leadership as the Director of the Interfaculty Program in Public Health since 2014. We greatly appreciate his dedication to the program.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Currie on her appointment as the incoming Director of the Interfaculty Program in Public Health.
