Announcement: Dr. Abdel-Rahman Lawendy appointed J.C. Kennedy Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Abdel-Rahman Lawendy has been appointed as the J.C. Kennedy Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, effective July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2029.

 Dr. Lawendy earned his Honours Bachelor of Science from the University of Waterloo. In 2003, he earned his MD from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, and in 2008, he completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery, followed by a fellowship in orthopaedic trauma at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. Dr. Lawendy also completed an arthroscopy fellowship with Dr. Peter Fowler in Doha, Qatar. He completed his PhD in Medical Biophysics in 2014. In 2009, he joined the Department of Surgery at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and now serves as a Professor of Surgery in the department.   

Dr. Lawendy established the Master of Science in Surgery program, and since 2014, he has served as the Graduate Program Committee Chair for the Department of Surgery. From 2018 to 2021, he served as Assistant Dean, International, at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, supporting international educational initiatives. From 2016 to 2021, he also served as the Regional Director (International) for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. 

Dr. Lawendy founded the Nazem Kadri Ambulatory Surgical Care Centre at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and is currently the Medical Director and Site Chief for the Centre. He has won several Department and University awards for teaching excellence. In 2020, he was awarded the Schulich Medicine & Dentistry Alumni of Distinction Award for excellence in medical research and educational leadership. 

Dr. Lawendy specializes in adult orthopaedic trauma, with a particular focus on complex lower extremity reconstruction. Internationally recognized as an expert in the basic science of the compartment syndrome – a traumatic condition that can result in limb loss or death – his current research focuses on the pathophysiology of the syndrome. Dr. Lawendy’s laboratory has developed a small animal model to study the microvascular changes that occur in this low-flow ischemic state to implement medical therapies, such as carbon monoxide, to reduce tissue injury. He is the current Director of the Trauma Research Lab at the Centre for Critical Care Illness Research at the Lawson Health Research Institute and the Chief of the Orthopaedic Trauma Service at Victoria Hospital, LHSC. 

Dr. Lawendy currently holds grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, the AMOSO Opportunities Fund, the Department of Surgery, and the Lawson Health Research Institute. He has authored 75 peer-reviewed journal articles and contributed to three book chapters. He has lectured extensively on topics related to orthopedic trauma across Europe, Japan, China, the Middle East and North America.
