Announcement: Dr. Robin Mackin appointed as Assistant Dean, Learner Experience (UME)

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Robin Mackin has been appointed as Assistant Dean, Learner Experience (UME) at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, effective August 1, 2024, to July 31, 2029.  

 Dr. Mackin received her BSc from the University of Nebraska, U.S.A., in 2010, and her MD from the University of Ottawa in 2015. She completed her paediatric residency and fellowship at McMaster University, and is currently pursuing a Master of Health Professions Education from Maastricht University. Dr. Mackin joined the Department of Paediatrics at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry in 2020 and currently holds the rank of Assistant Professor. 

Throughout her career, Dr. Mackin has consistently been recognized for her exceptional teaching and leadership. During her tenure at Western, she has received multiple faculty teaching awards annually. During her time at McMaster, she was the recipient of the Pediatrics Fellow Teaching Award, the McMaster PGME Resident Leader Award, the McMaster PGME Karen and Ian Fraser Endowment Award for Post Graduate Medical Specialties, the Bosco Paes Teaching Award and the PARO Resident Teaching Award. 

Dr. Mackin was a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 athlete with Academic and Athletic All-American honours. She also represented Canada in softball at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.  

Dr. Mackin’s extensive background in educational leadership and scholarly endeavours has prepared her exceptionally well for a role within the Learner Experience Office (LEO). Her career has been characterized by active involvement in diverse educational roles, projects and innovations, all aimed at enhancing the medical education journey.  

Dr. Mackin’s early experiences in medical training ignited a deep interest in understanding the socialization process within medical education leading to ongoing research and initiatives focused on developing strategies for personalized learning experiences that foster both personal and professional success.  

With expertise in coaching, particularly in facilitating impactful coaching conversations, Dr. Mackin is well-positioned to significantly contribute to initiatives aimed at supporting learners’ success at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. Additionally, her proficiency in curriculum development and competency-based medical education, along with strong leadership and team-building skills developed through her athletic career and medical practice, uniquely qualify her to support collaborative efforts and advance learner wellness and safety initiatives in the role.
