Announcement: Dr. Victor Ng appointed as the Assistant Dean, Distributed Education
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Victor Ng has been appointed as the Assistant Dean, Distributed Education, at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University effective May 1, 2023 to April 30, 2028.
Dr. Ng is an Emergency Medicine physician and Associate Professor in the Division of Emergency Medicine, Department of Medicine with Western University. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba in 2009. He completed his training in Family Medicine at Western University in 2011 and completed his Family Medicine/Emergency Medicine Fellowship Program at Western in 2012. He subsequently completed a Master of Health Professions Education through a joint program collaboration between the Centre for Education Research and Innovation (CERI) at Western University and Maastricht University in the Netherlands.
Dr. Ng has a broad understanding of medical education and rural practice. For over 10 years, he has continued to practice in rural and remote environments in southern and northern Ontario on a monthly basis, and enjoys teaching medical students and residents at those rural sites.
Dr. Ng has lead initiatives both nationally and internationally on rural medical education and issues relating to rural practice and health human resources. As the Associate Director, Programs and Practice Support at the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), he has led several important rural portfolios including serving as senior staff lead on issues related to rural access to care, attracting and retaining rural health human resources, and supporting rural physicians in maintaining competence in enhanced skills such as low risk obstetrics and anesthesia.
At an international level, Dr. Ng is currently chair of the Working Party on Education at the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) and a previous member of the WONCA Working Party on Rural Practice Council. He is co-editor of an undergraduate medical education textbook currently in press. He previously led the development of the WONCA global postgraduate medical education and continuing professional development standards, supporting medical education development and accreditation in several countries and advocacy work in sustaining and enhancing rural practice globally.
A keen and committed researcher, Dr. Ng has published over 40 peer-reviewed papers on medical education, advancing rural practice and improving health systems. He frequently presents at conferences globally and is a sought after keynote speaker.
As Assistant Dean, Distributed Education, Dr. Ng’s leadership responsibilities will include setting the vision, monitoring the progress, overseeing performance, reviewing outcomes, and leading improvements to medical education activities occurring within the rural and regional component of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry Distributed Education (DE) Program.
