January 27, 2022

Providing real-world experience to fourth-year dental students was the goal of an experiential pilot project under the direction of Dr. Abbas Jessani, Assistant Professor and Director of Dental Outreach and Community Engagement. The pilot began in local communities and soon expanded internationally to Rwanda and Uganda. Read more

February 4, 2022
Researchers received more than $7.7. million in funding through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) for a breadth of investigations, including musculoskeletal health, infectious diseases, cancer, and neurosciences. These projects demonstrate the diversity of research specializations at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry that offer the promise of improvements in our health. Read more

March 11, 2022

With two years on the frontlines of the pandemic, health-care providers were trying to rebuild a battered health care system, and repair their own mental health. In response, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry implemented the Peers for Peers program to support our clinical faculty members’ mental health. In a March commentary, Drs. Andrea Lum and Laura Foxcroft wrote that still more was required to “heal the healers.” Read more

Kueper graduated with Western’s first combined PhD, bringing together studies in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Combining these two disciplines, Kueper uses artificial intelligence to help identify health challenges in patients and provide solutions using everyday data from electronic health records, watches or smart phones. November 8, 2022

The largest hemodialysis trial ever published showed that lowering dialysis temperatures does not lead to improved patient outcomes. Led by Dr. Amit Garg, associate dean of clinical research at Schulich Medicine, the study was also an example of a large-scale trial that makes it easier and more cost effective for researchers to test potential health innovations and treatments in a real-world, clinical setting. November 16, 2022

The $16 million in funding enables Schulich Medicine’s ImPaKT to become a state-of-the-art biocontainment level 3 site, giving us the ability to test new antimicrobial strategies, develop a vaccine bank and meet the challenges of future pandemics. “We are uniquely positioned in terms of talent, resources and industry partnerships to be the leader in pathogen-fighting research in Canada,” said Eric Arts, executive director, ImPaKT Facility. Visionary, educator and friend, Dr. Peter Fowler, MD’64, co-founder of the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic, passed away on November 16, 2022. A pioneer in the rehabilitation of sports injuries and a prolific researcher and role model, he will be missed by the Western University community. Read more
