Medical device to manage blood loss approved by Health Canada

After a traumatic injury from an event such as a car crash or industrial accident, many patients die from blood loss before they ever enter the operating room. In order to improve survival, Asha Parekh, PhD, and Dr. Adam Power have used their ingenuity to develop a medical device that can keep blood flowing to the heart and the brain in a way that is fast, simple and safe.Supporting wellness in meaningful ways

Dr. Toni Zhong, Director of the University Health Network’s Breast Reconstruction Program, is a graduate of our Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery residency program ('07) and daughter of the late Dr. Robert Zhong. Dr. Zhong travelled to Bangladesh with the German-based charity Women for Women and six other doctors to treat women and children disfigured by burns. The team performed 60 surgeries in the week they were stationed on the remote Bangladeshi island. Dr. John Denstedt, Professor, Division of Urology, spent a week in Haiti at St. Francis de Sales Hospital in the center of Port-au-Prince, one of several hospitals impacted by the magnitude seven earthquake in 2010.
