Dr. Vivian McAlister was elected to the American Surgical Association at its meeting held this past April. Dr. McAlister joins Drs. John Duff and William Wall as members from London. The ASA was founded in 1880 and is considered to be the most prestigious surgical society in North America. Its journal, Annals of Surgery, which started publishing in 1885, has the highest impact factor of any surgical journal.
In addition to prominent surgeons from the United States, members of the American Surgical Association include surgeons from around the world. As stated on the ASA's website, "the primary mission of the Association is to be the premier organization for surgical science and scholarship and to provide a national forum for presenting the developing state of the art and science of general and sub-specialty surgery and the elevation of the standards of the medical/surgical profession."
