In Remembrance: Dr. Ronald (Ron) Passi

It is with great sadness that we announce that Dr. Ronald (Ron) Passi, Professor Emeritus, Department of Surgery, passed away on November 15, 2013.

Dr. Passi completed medical school at Western University, followed by internships and residency in the Department of Surgery at Western in General Surgery. He was awarded a Samuel McLaughlin Foundation Travelling Fellowship at Ohio State University Hospital to pursue training in biliary and pancreatic surgery. Dr. Passi joined the Department of Surgery at Western in 1968 as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1974 and to Full Professor in 1988.

Dr. Passi's contributions to research, education and patient care were significant and farreaching. He was well-known as an national and international expert in biliary tract disease and surgical management. Dr. Passi pioneered the technique of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and performed over 10,000 procedures. He established a state-of-the-art unit at LHSC unit in cooperation with the Department of Medical Imaging to manage these cases. Dr. Passi published extensively and held visiting professorships across North America. He was beloved by medical students and residents for his meticulous teaching. Dr. Passi was also well known for his passion for Nordic skiing and his joy and pride in his family. Our sincere condolences are extended to his wife Nancy and their children Sharon, Norm, and Eric, grandchildren, and extended family. A private family memorial service will be held in the future.
