Welcome Dr. Mariano Avino
Dr. Mariano Avino is a new Postdoctoral Associate in the Poon lab, funded by a grant from Genome Canada in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. He was awarded his PhD on phylogenetics of the Dipsacaceae (teasel) family at the University of Naples, Italy. He subsequently collaborated with the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm in a bioinformatic study of chitin synthases before becoming a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Alberta studying the evolutionary developmental biology of fruit opening in canola-related species. More recently, Dr. Avino was a bioinformatician at the Institute for High Performance Computing and Networking of the National Research Council of Naples where he specialized in next-generation sequence data processing and variant calling, proteomic and metabolomic data analysis, and the study of human muscular dystrophy. Mariano will be investigating the use of machine learning methods to understand biological diversification processes, such as the co-speciation of hosts and their pathogens.
