Welcome Dr. Art Poon
Dr. Subrata Chakrabarti and the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine extend a warm welcome to Dr. Art Poon. Art joins us August 1, 2016 as an Assistant Professor and researcher in viral evolution.
Dr. Poon comes to us from the University of British Columbia where he was an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and an Associate Research Scientist in Bioinformatics at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. He has 52 peer-reviewed publications and holds a New Investigator award (2013) from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). He is also a Career Investigator award recipient (2012) from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research.
Dr. Poon has been studying the evolution of viruses by applying methods in bioinformatics, phylogenetics, and machine learning. Dr. Poon will work closely with Dr. Eric Arts (Chair, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Western University). In collaboration with Dr. Arts, he will study evolution of HIV and hepatitis C viruses using phylogenetic approaches. Dr. Poon will also be engaged in our One Health undergraduate program and will help to coordinate a new graduate program in Medical Bioinformatics.
