Collaborative Research and Innovation Fund
The Collaborative Research and Innovation Fund (CRIF) is earmarked for collaborative research among faculty members in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry (the Department). This fund is intended to promote collaborative research between the basic science and clinical sides of the Department in pursuit of our shared academic mission.
CRIF is open to all faculty members with a primary appointment in the Department. Research projects must be developed jointly by two co-PIs, one of whom must be a Basic Scientist primarily appointed in PaLM and the other a Clinical Scientist (PhD) or Clinical Academic (MD or equivalent) at LHSC.
The value of the award is up to $15,000 and up to two awards may be granted per year.

Pathology Research and Innovation Fund
The Pathology Research and Innovation Fund (PRIF) funding (formerly PIFAD) is available to pathologists, residents, and clinical fellows in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry (the Department). This funding will support research that benefits the academic mission of the Department. For each competition (Fall and Spring), three granting streams are available:
- Stream 1: research project with pathologist as Principal Investigator (PI)
- Stream 2: research project with pathology trainee (resident or clinical fellow) as PI, with at least one pathologist as mentor. The pathology resident must be enrolled in the Diagnostic and Molecular Pathology or Neuropathology Residency Program at Western University. The pathologist mentor is responsible for supervising the project and overseeing project expenditures.
- Stream 3: publication fee reimbursement. Proposals in Stream 3 will only be considered when the FMC has not awarded up to two awards in Stream 1 or Stream 2 in each competition cycle. The pathologist seeking reimbursement must be the Principal or Corresponding Author on the publication. Publication costs will be reimbursed up to $5,000 CDN per request.
