Retirement: Dr. Norman B. Smith
Congratulations to Dr. Norman B. Smith on his retirement on June 30th after 37 years of service working in the Toxicology & Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) section of Clinical Biochemistry.
Norm was recruited as a Clinical Chemist to supervise the Toxicology & TDM Laboratory at University Hospital in 1982. Norman earned his BSc and MSc from the University of Guelph and his PhD in Biochemistry from McGill University. He became the Section Head of the Toxicology & TDM Laboratory, London Health Sciences Centre in 1994. Norm developed and implemented a wide menu of complex tests including volatile alcohols on GC, drugs of abuse testing and confirmation on GC-MS, vitamin testing on HPLC and immunosuppressive drug testing on Triple Quad LC/MS-MS.
Norm taught undergraduate courses in the Department of Biochemistry and the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. He is also a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry. In 2012, Norm was awarded a "Lifetime Achievement Award" by the Ontario Society of Clinical Chemists.
We will miss Norm for his leadership and team approach to drive positive change for our laboratories and for the patients and families we serve.
