Retirement: Dr. Candace Gibson
We extend our congratulations and best wishes to Dr. Candace Gibson on her retirement from Western University, effective July 1, 2020, after 38 years of dedicated service.
Dr. Gibson graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry in 1972 from McMaster University. She received her PhD in neuroscience through the Department of Nutrition and Food Science in 1977, from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge Massachusetts. Following post-doctoral training in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT, she was recruited as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry in 1982.
Dr. Gibson’s leadership contributions included Coordinator, Undergraduate Medical Health Informatics Program for the Departments of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Computer Science; Chair, Undergraduate BMSc Pathology and Toxicology Program; and Chair, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Graduate Education Committee. She was also an extraordinary leader within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, serving as Assistant Dean, Basic Medical Sciences Undergraduate Education (BMSUE) from July 1, 2016-June 30, 2019 and most recently as Acting Vice-Dean, Basic Sciences (July 1, 2018-June 30, 2020).
Dr. Gibson supervised more than 10 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and authored more than 70 peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, policy papers, and book chapters in experimental neuroscience and health informatics. Her research, which she will continue into retirement, involves looking at factors which help to translate research findings into clinical practice, in particular the use of information technology in facilitating research and knowledge transfer. Her principal focus is the impact of new technologies on the provision of health services and patient care, and in health education.
Dr. Gibson was the recipient of the Rollie Denison Leadership Institute Scholarship (2011-2012) and the AFMC-Infoway eHealth Award (2013). She served as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Healthcare Information Management Association (CMA) and received CHIMA’s Tribute to Excellence Award in 2016.
We wish Dr. Gibson a healthy and happy retirement and look forward to continued collaboration in her capacity as Adjunct Research Professor and Professor Emerita.
