Welcome to the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Western University.
Our vision is to be a nationally and internationally visible community of scientists, educators, clinicians, staff and learners, dedicated to being the cornerstone of the patient journey and united in the pursuit of knowledge, quality improvement and healthcare excellence.
Our mission is to provide comprehensive and high-quality diagnostic services, embrace new and innovative technologies, engage in transformational basic science, clinical and translational research, and to foster interdisciplinary collaboration. We aim to provide outstanding educational programs for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate learners, and other allied health care professionals. Our pursuit of this mission is characterized by a commitment to teamwork and collaboration, continuous quality improvement and to hold dear, a respect for diversity, mutual respect and accountability.
Our department incorporates hospital-based programs in Pathology, Laboratory Medicine, Microbiology and Molecular Diagnostics, with conjoint programs in Partnerships and Innovation as well as Quality and Performance.
At the university level, our faculty teach in the Basic Medical Sciences Undergraduate Education and the Undergraduate Medical Education programs. We offer research-based graduate degrees (MSc, PhD and GDip) along with a Master of Clinical Science-Pathologists’ Assistant program, the first accredited program of its kind in Canada. We have a tradition of evolving our educational offerings to incorporate new disciplines and approaches, as evidenced by our implementation of the first comprehensive One Health education program in Canada and more recently a Basic Medical Sciences module in Medical Bioinformatics. We have Royal College accredited residency programs in Anatomical Pathology and Neuropathology. We also offer advanced training: a Surgical Pathology fellowship program and an Area of Focused Competence diploma in Cytopathology.
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is an integral part of the vibrant Western research enterprise. Our faculty members have expertise in a broad array of basic, translational, and clinical research across multiple themes, which reflects the breadth of our faculty complement. Areas of research excellence include cardiovascular, respiratory health and metabolic diseases; cancer biology; infection, immunity and inflammation; pathobiology of neurologic diseases; and bioinformatics.
