Resident Events
Annual Resident BBQ
Every July, the Radiology Residency Program puts on a BBQ for all residents, faculty and staff. It is a way for our newest residents to get to know everyone, and for all of us spread throughout the city to reconnect. The Program Director graciously hosts this event at his or her home, and we have the event catered and bartended by local businesses. You can see the photos posted on our Facebook page by clicking here.

Annual Softball Game (The Achilles Cup)
2018
With the Radiologists as two-time defending champions, the rivalry was renewed and the residents seemed invigorated by new recruits. The game was a hard-fought battle back and forth. The Radiologists jumped to an early lead following Dr. Gary Brahm’s bunt triple which reminded us of little league play. The residents never gave up and tied the game in dramatic fashion to force extra innings. After each team scored a run in the extra frame, the game was declared a tie. There were no losers this year as we raised a glass at the pub to celebrate.
2016
Although the Radiologists were fewer in number, they made up for it in heart and determination with a repeat victory over the residents. Special mention goes out to Peter Lynch who pitched for the faculty as well as his own resident team. Better luck next time residents! No matter the outcome the social afterwards was enjoyed by everyone.
2015
The Radiologists rebounded form their loss the previous year and with friends and family cheering them on took home the Achilles Cup. They were led by Dr. Landis who hit a home run to help seal the victory. With no hard feelings, everyone gathered at Crossings Pub for well deserved refreshments
2014
This was the second annual Resident vs. Staff Softball Game, also known as The Achilles Cup. The staff won the inagural game, but the residents bounced back in 2014, winning a decisive victory over the staff by a score of 17-11.
Annual Resident Retreat
2018
We returned to the lovely Elmhust Inn & Spa for this year’s retreat where we were again joined by the Queen’s Radiology residents. This year’s theme was on the CanMEDS Health Advocate role. One of the most educational sessions was the plenary on “Advocacy, Accreditation and Quality of Care” led by the Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee – Dr. Andrea Lum.
2017
The theme for this year’s retreat was the Communicator and Collaborator CanMEDS roles. For the first time the residents at Queen’s University joined us for a combined session. The highlight of the retreat was listening to Bobby Umar, a motivational speaker and communication expert.
2016
Held in downtown Toronto with a focus on the CanMEDS Leader role. The two day event included lectures from Radiology experts at the University of Toronto as well as from Western University. Presentations from OMA leadership as well as Radiology specialty organizations were a highlight of the retreat along with sampling the night life of Toronto as a group.
2015
This year the retreat was held at the picturesque Elmhust Inn & Spa in nearby Ingersoll. We were privileged to have Dr. James Fraser, past CAR President, as our guest speaker. The theme of this year’s retreat was the Professional CanMEDS role and a panel of academic and community radiologists addressed the different roles radiologists play in patient care.
2014
On November 21st the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University Radiology Program held their 2nd annual resident retreat at the Ivey Spencer Leadership Centre. This resident-run initiative has an underlying philosophy of mentorship and a focus on multifaceted resident development. This year we decided to look to the future and hear about new or upcoming developments in radiology. This gave the staff and residents an opportunity to share in the exciting advances to the field with our theme being: The Frontiers of Radiology.
Royal College-style sessions were organized for the morning, with a special thank you to Drs. Alison Spouge, Anat Kornecki and Donald Lee for their shared time, experience and mentorship! Our PGY 3-5 residents each got to spend some time in the proverbial Hot Seat while the more junior residents got an idea of what to expect.
In the afternoon we heard from Dr. Ian Ross about the Program’s direction, vision and curriculum design including some potential new learning, assessment and logging software. Our Chair & Chief Dr. Andrea Lum spoke about Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) and province-wide peer review. Drs. Donald Lee, Zahra Kassam and Amol Mujoomdar shared some of the exciting developments in their fields of neuroradiology, body radiology and interventional radiology, respectively.
The evening closed off with an entertaining and competitive two rounds of non-radiology trivia hosted by Dr. Jonathan Chung. On behalf of the organizing committee, we would like to thank all the volunteers who made this day possible and look forward to next year!
2013
On October 17 and 18, the Western University Radiology Program held their first resident retreat at the Oakwood Resort in Grand Bend. This was a resident run and funded initiative designed to explore some of the non-traditional areas of radiology education. This year, we focused on the professional side of radiology. We were fortunate to have fellows, staff, and other professionals from London and beyond take time out of their busy schedules to hold various seminars which covered a wide range of topics that included career guidance, financial planning, teleradiology, academic and community radiology, administration, exam preparation, and even philosophy. Several resident run sessions covered general residency advice as well as the consensus on resident duty hours. Our retreat culminated with a visit from OAR president Dr.Mark Prieditis as well as CEO Ray Foley who gave an all-encompassing view of the challenges facing radiology in Ontario.
It wasn’t all work and no play by any means. We had a raucous turnout for our trivia night followed by early morning (a little too early for most) yoga.
The reception for the retreat was extremely positive with many strong post-retreat evaluations submitted by the residents. On behalf of the organizing committee, we would like to again thank all of the volunteers who made this event possible.

mentor groups
Each resident is assigned to a mentor group consisting of a Radiology faculty adviser and a resident from each post graduate year in Radiology. These groups meet several times per year and sometimes even combine to engage in some friendly rivalry.
visiting professor series
Each year multiple visiting professors are hosted at Western University for a two-day event of learning and lectures attended by all of the Radiology residents. Experts in Radiology come from all over Canada and the United States to spend dedicated time with the residents.
