Internationalization Awards

The following 2024-2025 Internationalization Awards applications are available to full-time undergraduate medical students at the Schulich School of Medicine who are participating in Western-sanctioned international global health electives.

Please review award descriptions carefully as individual criteria and application requirements may vary. Eligible candidate applications will be reviewed by the Internationalization Office and forwarded to the Undergraduate Awards Committee (UAC) for final recipient selection. Due to the volume of applications, only successful candidates will be notified (via email).

Application Deadlines

Global health electives (International and Health Equity Learning, IHEL) run on different schedules for different years. Please ensure that you review the deadlines for your current year.

Year 1 and Year 2 students: Applications for funding are accepted on a rolling basis and are due by 11:59pm on Sunday, April 27 2025 (for students travelling in the next six months).

Year 4 students: Applications for the United Church Women of Antler River Watershed Global Health Award are due by 11:59pm on Monday, March 31st 2025. 


INTERNATIONALIZATION ANY YEAR AWARDS:

Dr. Carol Hindmarsh Summer Studentship Award

Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student in any year the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry who is confirmed to be participating in a summer student project working with under-served and vulnerable patient populations in Canada or abroad, as part of an existing student group participating in outreach work, or as an independent project. Preference will be given to a student registered either in year 1 or 2. Interested students are asked to submit an online application to the Undergraduate Medical Education Office. The recipient will be selected by a committee from the Internationalization Office from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry with the approval of the Progression & Awards Committee. This award was established by a generous donation from the Hindmarsh Family. 

 

Dr. Carolyn J. Warrick Memorial Award

Awarded annually to a full-time student in any year of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry to provide financial support for an elective medical/healthcare placement in a low-resource country. Interested students are asked to submit an online application to the Undergraduate Medical Education Office. The recipient will be selected by the Committee from the Internationalization Office from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry with the approval of the Progression & Awards Committee. This award was established by the friends and family of Dr. Carolyn J. Warrick (MD ’86).

 


INTERNATIONALIZATION AWARDS (MEDS 2025)

 

United Church Women of Antler River Watershed Global Health Award

Awarded to a full-time student in their fourth year of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program who, during their studies at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry has made major contributions towards advancing the fields of maternal, newborn or child health medicine in a low-income resource country; or has plans to pursue any one of these fields upon graduation. Interested students are asked to submit an online application to the Undergraduate Medical Education Office. Submitted online applications must incorporate a support document that substantiates activities completed or plans for the future. The recipient will be selected by a committee from the Internationalization Office from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry with the approval of the Progression & Awards Committee. This award was established with a generous gift from the United Church Women of London Conference.

 

Dr. P.H. Brooke International Travel Award in Medicine - Applications CLOSED

Awarded annually to a full-time student entering fourth year of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program who will be pursuing a medical overseas experience in an African country. This award is intended to assist with the travel or program expenses directly related to a medical overseas elective experience. Interested students are asked to submit an online application to the Undergraduate Medical Education Office. The recipient will be selected by a committee from the Internationalization Office from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry with the approval of the Undergraduate Medical Education Awards Committee. This award was established by Dr. Priscilla Brooke (MD 1969). Dr. Brooke’s time spent as a medical doctor in several African countries was a life-altering experience.

 

Joan Scarfone Memorial Award - Applications CLOSED

Awarded to a full-time student entering their fourth year of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program who: will be pursuing a medical overseas experience in a low-resource country, will travel within the next 6 months, and will be awarded prior to the student's departure. Preference will be given to a student registered at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry Windsor Campus, however, if there are no qualified students that apply from the Windsor Campus the award may be distributed to a qualified medical student at the London Campus. Interested students are asked to submit an online application to the Undergraduate Medical Education Office. The recipient will be selected by a committee from the Internationalization Office from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry with the approval of the Progression & Awards Committee. This award was established by Dr. David John Scarfone (MD`82) in honour of his mother Joan.

 

Meds Class of 1995 Dr. Rob Tingley Memorial Award - Applications CLOSED

Awarded to a full-time student entering their fourth year of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program who, will be pursuing a medical overseas experience in a low-resource country and will travel within the next 6 months. This award is intended to assist with the travel or program expenses directly related to a medical overseas elective experience. Interested students are asked to submit an online application to the Undergraduate Medical Education Office. The recipient will be selected by a committee from the Internationalization Office from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry with the approval of the Undergraduate Medical Education Awards Committee.  This award was established by the friends and family of Dr. Rob Tingley of the Medical Class of 1995.  Dr. Tingley's elective in Kijabe, Kenya in 1994 was a life-altering experience.  His friends and family have chosen to honour his legacy by enabling future students to have similar experiences.
