Spotlighted opportunities

Mitacs Globalink

Mitacs is a national, not-for-profit organization that has designed and delivered research and training programs in Canada for 15 years. Working with 60 universities, thousands of companies, and both federal and provincial governments, Mitacs builds partnerships that support industrial and social innovation in Canada. Globalink Research Award

Value: $6,000.

The Mitacs Globalink Research Award (GRA) supports research collaborations between Canada and select partner organizations and eligible countries and regions.

Under the joint supervision of a home and host professor, successful senior undergraduate students, graduate students, as well as postdoctoral fellows will receive a $6,000 research award to conduct a 12- to 24-week research project in the other country. Awards are offered in partnership with Mitacs’s Canadian academic partners (and, in some cases, with Mitacs’s international partners) and are subject to available funding. Award supports student travel, accommodation, and research-related expenses. Eligibility: Open to undergraduate and graduate students in all disciplines. 

Endeavour Research Fellowship (Australia)

The fellowship provides financial support for short-term research projects in any field in Australia. Master's and PhD students, as well as postdoctoral fellows, at Canadian universities are invited to apply. The Australia Awards–Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships also offer opportunities for Canadians to undertake long term study under an Endeavour Postgraduate Scholarship and professional development in Australia offered under the Endeavour Executive Fellowship. 

Mitacs-JSPS Internship (Japan)

10-week research project in Japan that aims to strengthen Canada-Japan research collaborations. JSPS will provide round-trip airfare, insurance, a maintenance allowance, and a research support allowance. Student participants will receive an orientation on Japanese culture and research systems, and develop research skills, cultural fluency, and a professional network.

DAAD German Academic Exchange Service

The Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) / German Academic Exchange Service is a private, publicly funded, self-governing organization of higher education institutions in Germany. DAAD is the German national agency for the support of international academic cooperation. DAAD offers programs and funding for students, faculty, researchers and others in higher education, providing financial support to almost 120,000 individuals per year. They also represent the German higher education system abroad, promote Germany as an academic and research destination, and help build ties between institutions around the world. RISE (Germany)

RISE is a summer internship program for undergraduate science students to work with research groups at top institutions across Germany for 2-3 months during the summer. RISE interns are matched with doctoral students whom they assist and who serve as their mentors. The working language is English.

Eligibility: Undergraduate students from the United States, Canada and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering.

Value: 650 Euros per month. All scholarship holders receive stipends from the DAAD to help cover living expenses, while partner universities & research institutes provide housing assistance. If you stay more than 22 days in one calendar month, you receive the lump sum of 650 Euros. If you stay less than 23 days in one month, the scholarship is calculated on a daily basis (650/30). The scholarship is meant to cover living expenses such as housing and food. The award also includes health insurance as well as accident and personal liability insurance, issued directly through the DAAD insurance office. In addition, all scholarship holders are invited to a paid-for three-day RISE Germany meeting in Heidelberg in July 2016. All participants of the RISE Germany meeting will receive an allowance of 160 Euros to buy a Rail Pass. Note that airfare to Germany and back is not covered. 

RISE Professional (Germany)

Rise Professional offers scientific research internships for graduate students in Germany at companies and non-university research institutions with strong relations to industry. All participants receive a scholarship from DAAD and an additional stipend from their host company/institution to help cover living expenses. Funding is possible for a period of three months in summer or fall. German language requirements vary according to the internship placement. Alumni from the RISE Germany program are also eligible to apply.

Eligibility: Master’s and PhD students from North America in the field of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, engineering or a closely related field.
