K. Martin, DDS 2015, wins Quintessence Research Award
Dr. Harvey Goldberg, Assistant Director of Research presents Kathleen Martin with the Quintessence Research Award.
The 2015 Quintessence Research Award was presented to Kathleen Martin (DDS 2015) at the Convocation Ceremony and Awards Luncheon for the Dentistry Class of 2015.
This award is given annually to a graduating dental student who has been exemplary in research in the undergraduate dental program. Kathleen worked on her research under the supervision of Dr. Doug Hamilton. The focus of her project was on development of novel scaffolds that would bind and slowly release growth factors (basic fibroblast growth factor) to aid in gingival (gum) tissue regeneration.
Dr. Hamilton comments, 'Kathleen’s excellence in research has been strongly recognized not only at Western, but also in both the Canadian and North American forums. After his first year in my laboratory, Kathleen was awarded both the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry Hinman Student Research Travel Award, and ADA Foundation Travel Award at our internal Dentistry Research Day. She attended the Hinman Student Research Symposium in Memphis in October 2012 and received the Award for Most Outstanding Presentation in Clinical Research. In 2013, she received Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry Award of Research Excellence, and first in the Junior Category of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR) Student Research Award competition. Kathleen was selected to present her research at the AADR/CADR meeting in Charlotte, NC in March 2014.
