- Teaching Diversity: The Science You Need to Know to Explain Why Race Is Not Biological: Written for educators to help teach race as a social construct through a scientific lens, using primary literature.
- The Kidneys in Black and White: Inheriting Medical Racism: An article by a medical student from the University of Washington outlining the genealogy of racism in medical thinking.
- Myths about Physical Racial Differences were Used to Justify Slavery - and Are Still Believed by Doctors Today: An overview of historical medical experiments and unproven biological “truths” the medical community used to justify slavery.
- When Black medical students weren’t welcome at Queen’s: An article about when Queen’s banned Black medical students in order to improve their reputation.
- London, Ontario Was a Racist Asshole to Me: A Western alumnus’ experiences with racism at Western University and in London. Extremely relevant for local context; this is what Schulich students experience.
- The White Space: Characterizes the experience of Black people navigating predominantly white spaces with personal, narrative examples by a Black author.
- White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack: Dr. Peggy McIntosh’s essay on white privilege, using examples from her own experiences.
- The Performance if “Antiracism” Curricula: Kevin J. Gutierrez, M.D. discusses how until antiracism is seen as a continual practice of (un)learning we will not achieve the desired outcome of change.
- “How Racism Creeps into Medicine”: Hamza Shaban provides an example of eugenics in speaking with the author Lundy Braun of Breathing Race into the Machine as they briefly discuss the science of racial difference, its history, and its resurgence.
- Does STEM Stand Out? Examining Racial/Ethnic Gaps in Persistence Across Postsecondary Fields: Riegle-Crumb, King, & Irizarry (2019) conduct a national study showing that Black and Latina/o youth who begin college as STEM majors are more likely to depart than their White peers.
- How Gender and Race Stereotypes Impact the Advancement of Scholars in STEM: Professors’ Biased Evaluations of Physics and Biology Post-Doctoral Candidates: Eaton et al. (2019) conducts a study showing that the perceived race and gender of a postdoctoral applicant’s name affects how an otherwise-identical CV is judged.
- Building an Inclusive AAS - The Critical Role of Diversity and Inclusion Training for AAS Council and Astronomy Leadership: Brinkworth et al. (2015) writes a paper laying out the case for diversity and inclusion training in professional societies; written for astronomy but much of the content is applicable to other fields.
