Assessment of EPAs
Clinical Teaching and EPA Assessment
Observe, Feedback, Document
In CBD, frontline clinical teachers do not make judgements about learners.
The expectation is that they observe trainees in practice and provide written-verbal feedback designed to promote learner growth. Feedback is documented in various work based assessment (WBA) tools. Completing WBA tools involves clinical teachers rating learners practice performance using entrustment scales and detailed narrative descriptors.
What is an Entrustment Scale?
What Assessment Tools are available?
1. EPA observation (form 1 & 2), which is used to document resident performance
2. Multi-source feedback (form 3), which may be completed by physicians, off-service physicians or allied care team members as directed by the program
3. Field note (form 4), which is used to document any observation of a trainee’s performance. This form can be used in any setting to provide useful information linked to an EPA post-hoc, if relevant.
