Neurocritical Care Fellowship
Neurocritical care combines the disciplines of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuroradiology, Neuroanesthesia and Critical Care. Since 2003, the two restructured multidisciplinary intensive care units (ICU) at London Health Sciences Centre manage a large group of critically ill patients from all medical and surgical disciplines. A significant proportion of this care involves patients with primary neurological or neurosurgical diseases or other disorders with a high incidence of neurological complications.
The adult neurocritical care program will provide numerous opportunities for improved patient management and outcomes, teaching, research and new technology assessment. Neurocritical care lends itself to the application of an evidence-based approach to patient care, continuous quality assurance and improvement initiatives. With our colleagues in Epidemiology, we have an excellent opportunity for outcomes research, examining effects of changes in practice and resultant patient outcomes and resource utilization.
The 1 year neurocritical care fellowship is designed to allow graduates from programs in neurology, neurosurgery, or critical care (applicants from other disciplines may be considered on a case-by-case basis) to gain a concentrated experience in neurocritical care. The fellow will have daily contact/supervision with Dr. Gofton or other neurological/neurosurgical/neuroradiology/critical care/anesthesia colleagues who will assist the resident in achieving his/her objectives. The fellow will have the opportunity to participate in and attend teaching rounds in Critical Care as well as his/her own specialty.
The general goals are for the fellow to have an intensive experience and to increase the knowledge base in both neurological and neurosurgical critical illnesses and neurological aspects of systemic critical illness. The fellow should gain competence in assessing such patients and in arriving at diagnostic and treatment plans.
