Epilepsy/EEG Fellowship - Adult
The Western University Comprehensive Epilepsy Program is long established and internationally recognized. Its highly skilled and experienced multidisciplinary team addresses all aspects of care for patients with epilepsy, particularly the evaluation and management of patients requiring resective epilepsy surgery and neuromodulation. Epileptologists with worldwide acclaim have received their training in this program, which currently has Canada's largest observational Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) with 11 beds. The program remains highly active in epilepsy research, and continually strives for teaching excellence. The 1-2 year EEG/Epilepsy Fellowship provides trainees with expert level proficiency in the interpretation of video EEG scalp recordings (routine, continuous and longer-term EMU), and video Stereo EEG recordings in the EMU. Fellows actively contribute to all areas of presurgical evaluation for medically refractory epilepsy including Phase I evaluation, ESAM, epilepsy surgery conference presentations, intracranial EEG monitoring (Phase II), ECoG, and cortical stimulation/functional mapping. Under close supervision by a team of epileptologists, they perform focused but complete clinical evaluations of patients with epilepsy with the provision of expert recommendations for initial work-up and management in the inpatient (EMU and Epilepsy Consult Service) and outpatient (Epilepsy and Autoimmune Neurology Clinics) settings. Fellows regularly present and/or discuss cases in a multidisciplinary milieu at Epilepsy Rounds, Epilepsy Surgery Rounds, EEG Rounds, Fellows Journal Club, Pediatric EEG Semiology Rounds and the Canadian Epilepsy Teaching Network (CETN) Monthly Virtual Rounds. They also have scheduled didactic teaching, self-directed fellow teaching and an annual CETN EEG exam prep course. Fellows are expected in participate in epilepsy-related research, as well as teach and mentor neurology/neurosurgery residents and medical students completing their epilepsy/EEG rotation.
