Dr. Lois Champion, Associate Dean
As Associate Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education I am proud to work with our PGME, CBME teams, and our over 55 residency programs. 
As we transition to CBME, residency education is more individualized, focusing on direct observation and assessment of what are known as ‘Entrustable Professional Activities’ or EPAs – really identifying what learners need to be able to do, providing more opportunity for learners to identify their own learning goals, as well as an emphasis on focused and frequent assessments.
CBME creates a culture shift and positive change for our learners and faculty. Learners have individualized, clearer learning plans which are adaptable and flexible. Learners will receive more frequent and meaningful feedback. Faculty are also able to provide more specific and timely feedback to learners.
Dr. Hari Iyer, Director of Curriculum & Assessment
As a Nephrologist, I have been deeply involved with CBME since 2017. In my role as Program Director for Nephrology (2017-2023), I oversaw my specialty's launch of Competence by Design. Since 2021, I have also been the Program Director for the Area Of Focused Competence Solid Organ Transplantation Program at Western.
For the 2022-2023 year, we have 39 residency programs that are officially CBD with a total of 47 programs that will have transitioned by the 2024-2025 academic year.
I am also very lucky to have a solid Operations Team so we can provide implementation resources, faculty development content, training sessions/workshops and develop/upgrade the Elentra portal to meet our complex needs. We also meet with Schulich education leaders through our PGME Committee and Resident Advisory Committee, engage with our distributed faculty, develop program evaluation strategies, and use various communication tools with our CBME community so that we can continuously learn about how to make CBME even better.
