The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph's Health Care London, invite applications/nominations for the position of Chair/Chief of the Department of Surgery.
The Department of Surgery is a vibrant department with strengths in multiple clinical domains and excellence in research, education, simulation and robotics. The Department is composed of 82 clinical academics, 9 research scientists and approximately 68 adjunct professor/surgeons in communities across Southwestern Ontario. The Department of Surgery has eight Divisions: Cardiac Surgery, General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Urology. In addition there are four sub-units tied to one or more Divisions: The Hand and Upper Limb Centre, the Multi-Organ Transplant Program, the Fowler Kennedy Sports Medicine Clinic; and the Trauma Program. The educational programs include teaching for undergraduate medical students in surgical education curriculum and research activity, the postgraduate Royal College Accredited Core Surgery program and innovative graduate programs, including a Masters of Science in Surgery. The department is closely affiliated with CSTAR (Canadian Surgical Technologies & Advanced Robotics), Canada's leading national interdisciplinary centre for the development, introduction, evaluation and teaching of new minimally invasive surgical technologies.
The new Chair/Chief must have demonstrated competency in scholarship and the vision to expand the strengths of integrated teaching and research programs of the department. He/she will have demonstrated leadership and be an excellent communicator able to advocate for the departmental mission and goals to its partners and to the community. He/she will work collaboratively with basic and clinical scientists and clinicians. The successful candidate must be an accomplished clinician, with a strong record of teaching, research and clinical service, with an MD or equivalent and eligible for licensure in Ontario. Academic rank and contractual arrangements will be commensurate with experience and qualification.
