Dr. David Nicolle appointed as Acting Chair/Chief, Department of Ophthalmology

Congratulations Dr. David Nicolle, on being appointed as Acting Chair/Chief, Department of Ophthalmology, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University and its teaching hospitals, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph's Health Care London, effective July 1, 2013.
Dr. Nicolle graduated from the University of Zimbabwe, Harare, Zimbabwe in 1971. He received his M.D in 1971, from The University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. He completed his residency training at Harare Hospital Eye Unit in Zimbabwe, Africa, the Department of Ophthalmology at the London Hospital, London, England, and Birmingham and Midland Eye Hospital, Birmingham, England (1973-77). Dr. Nicolle completed a fellowship in Neuro-ophthalmology and ocular pathology at Pennsylvania Hospital, and the Scheie Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia followed in 1978. He joined the Department of Ophthalmology at McGill University, Montreal in 1978. Dr. Nicolle was recruited as Associate Professor to the Departments of Ophthalmology and Clinical Neurological Sciences, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University in 1990. Dr. Nicolle's previous administrative experience includes Chair, Undergraduate Medical Education Committee, Department of Ophthalmology for 15 years and Chair, Examination Board in Ophthalmology, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for eight years.
Dr. Nicolle's research involves eye movements in three dimensions and color, Doppler imaging of the eye and orbit related to ocular ischemic syndrome and carotid stenosis. Other areas of interest are the functional MRI studies on humans for recovery of visual function following retinal and cortical lesions and mapping of ocular dominance columns in human VI using functional MRI.
Dr. Nicolle was the recipient of the Teaching Award of Excellence in Continuing Medical Education, Western University (1996).
