Cognitive neurology and geriatric medicine join forces
Monday, June 10, 2013
The number of Canadians living with Alzheimer's and other related dementias (ARD) is projected to increase from 500,000 in 2010 to 1.25 million in 2038. To stem this growing tide, researchers throughout the world are feverishly investigating promising new ARD treatments.
Some of the best ARD clinicians , educators and researchers in the world are located right here in London and two of these teams have joined forces to treat and combat these disorders. St. Joseph's cognitive neurology program is now co-located at Parkwood Hospital with Geriatric Medicine, making this the primary Southwestern Ontario location for interdisciplinary cognition clinics, education and research activities.
"This consolidation will strengthen our services by enabling coordinated care and enhanced collaboration, innovation and discovery," says Elaine Gibson, vice president complex, specialty aging and rehabilitative care. "For patients, this means providing them with the latest in innovative, evidence-based care."
At an open house June 11 there will be opportunities to interview members of the geriatric medicine and cognitive neurology teams, have a glimpse into future plans, and tour newly-renovated clinical and research spaces.
As well, the clinics offered by these services will be showcased including the Aging Brain and Memory Clinic for those with ARD and mild cognitive impairment; the Cognitive Neurology Clinic for adults with concerns related to frontal-temporal dementia, ARD and Multiple Sclerosis; and DriveABLE- the driving assessment centre for older adults with cognitive concerns.
Current research initiatives will also be highlighted including neuroimaging, Lewy Body treatment, gait studies, and non-drug approaches including exercise, nutrition and Tai Chi. Cognitive Neurology and Geriatric Medicine are part of the Specialized Geriatric Services program at St. Joseph's Parkwood Hospital.
