More than a hundred special smiles
Thursday, July 22, 2010
The many Schulich Dentistry volunteers who helped out at the "Healthy Athletes -Special Smiles" program have 111 reasons to smile. That's how many athletes from the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games came through the free dental screening program at the main clinic between July 12th to the 14th.
"I have received positive feedback from the athletes, coaches and mission staff that went through the screenings," wrote Caterina Rewega, the Sport Manager of Special Olympics Canada. "Many of our athletes do not have the channels or resources available to maintain ongoing and proper oral health care. Therefore your team of staff and clinical volunteers has helped 111 more athletes to improve their overall health and well being. You should all be very happy with these results!"
During the screening, volunteer dentists, dental students, staff and oral hygienists checked althletes' teeth and gums and provided a lesson on proper oral care. Mouth guards were also supplied where necessary.
