Ecosystem Health Chair reappointed

We are pleased to announce the second term of Dr. Charlie Trick as the Beryl Ivey Chair in Ecosystem Health (July 1, 2009 - June 30, 2014) for the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.

Dr. Trick holds a PhD from the University of British Columbia and is an authority on environmental aspects of ecosystem health and community adaptation to environmental changes. As part of the Ecosystem Health Research Group, he provides leadership and scientific insight into measurement of environmental stress in natural communities and human-influenced environments. Using philosophy consistent with the mandate of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Dr. Trick initiates and designs participatory research programs with community programs that build on capacity building, education and social transition with a goal of balance between resources of the earth and community needs.

Current projects for Dr. Trick include an Ecosystem Health and Sustainability Project for Lake Naivasha (Kenya) and a Government of Japan/North Pacific Marine Science Organization-funded Safe Seafood Initiative that provide analytical capacity to monitor toxins in locally harvested seafood to coastal communities in the Pan-Pacific region. He is a team member for Western -based projects concerning ecosystem health and communities at risk, including the Walpole Island First Nation and Attawapiskat First Nation Community Contaminant studies (led by Prof. Jack Bend), Climate Change and Security Assessment (led by Prof. Gordon McBean), Ecosystem Health and Coastal Communities Program (Saltspring Island, led by Dr. David Rapport) and is developing an Ecosystem Health study of Yakutia, Siberia along with local colleagues.
