Wednesday, October 21, 2009
Dr. O. Harold Warwick, former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1961-65 , died this morning in the Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital, a unit that he helped to found.
Dr. Warwick was born in 1915 in St. John, New Brunswick. He graduated with a B.A. from Mount Allison University, a B.A. in Physiology from Oxford University, and an M.D. from McGill University. Dr. Warwick interned at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal before joining the R.C.A.F. He completed postgraduate work at the Royal Victoria Hospital, the Royal Cancer Hospital, and the Brampton Chest Hospital in London, England. On returning to Canada, he practiced internal medicine in Montreal and taught at McGill University. He also became Executive Director of the National Cancer Institute of Canada for seven years.
In 1961 Dr. Warwick accepted the position of Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Western. Dr. Warwick maintained the position for four years before becoming the Vice-President of Health Sciences for seven years. Dr. Warwick was awarded an LL.D. degree from Mount Allison University and The University of Western Ontario's Alumni Association Award of Merit.
I have had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Warwick over the years that I have been Dean, and of having him attend celebratory events such as the recent unveiling of the plaque in the Medical Sciences Building lobby to honour G. Edward Hall. He always had a warm word to offer and a twinkle in his eye. We offer sincere condolences to his family.
Carol Herbert, Dean
