Annual Dentistry Research Day on Wednesday

The Annual Schulich Dentistry Research Day takes place on Wednesday afternoon, October 22nd starting with the John T. Hamilton Distinguished Lecture at 12:30 p.m. The speaker is Dr. Don Brunette from the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Brunette is an engaging and entertaining speaker, and is the author of the text "Critical Thinking: Understanding and Evaluating Dental Research. His talk will be held in Auditorium A, 3rd floor, University Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre.

Then from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., a poster session consisting of presentations from summer students, DCS students and graduate orthodontic and OMFS residents will be held in Patio Room 2 & 3 on the 3rd floor of U-H. Several student poster presentations report research on the next generation of biomaterials for use in tissue engineering to regrow bone and improve the anchorage of dental and orthopedic implants in bone.

Two research projects are aimed at raising global awareness of the oral health problems faced by refugees and under-serviced populations. These projects were linked to two volunteer outreach programs. First, The University of Western Ontario Helping Hands (UWOHH), a group of professional and undergraduate students with a mission to provide humanitarian support for more than 650 refugee families in the Palestinian refugee camps and underprivileged communities in Lebanon. Second is MedOutreach, which is working in Tanzania, Africa.
