With the retirement of current Director Dr. Gerry Kent, Dr. Tyrrel de Langley has been named The University of Western Ontario's new Director of Animal Care and Veterinary Services (ACVS), effective July 1, 2008.
Over the past 10 years, de Langley has served as a clinical veterinarian in ACVS and is currently the unit's Assistant Director. Already familiar with the research environment at Western, he will be responsible for maintaining and expanding the high standards of research and animal care throughout London.
During his time at the University, he has also pursued advanced training in laboratory animal medicine and certificates in Good Laboratory Practices from the Biotechnology Human Resource Council of Canada, University Management from the University of Manitoba, and in Public Sector Management from the Canadian Institute of Management.
Having graduated from Ontario Veterinary College in 1983 de Langley previously spent 15 years in emergency medicine and private clinical practice in Toronto and London. He has extensive experience in the business aspect of veterinary medical operations, has founded several large hospitals and has served as study director in various clinical trials for major pharmaceutical companies.
"Gerry Kent has provided tremendous leadership for ACVS and the appointment of Tyrrel de Langley to Director will enable Western to continue to provide exceptional services to our researchers, while remaining at the forefront of ethical and animal care standards, says Ted Hewitt, Western's Vice-President (Research & International Relations).
