Tom Scott, Associate Dean-Windsor Program

Tom Scott has been appointed Associate Dean - Windsor Program, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western and Director, Medical Studies at the University of Windsor.

Scott graduated from the University of St. Andrews and University of Edinburgh in . His career in medical science research began at the National Institute for Medical Research, the primary research institute of the Medical Research Council, in London, . Scott's first teaching position was as a lecturer in anatomy at the London Hospital Medical College of the University of London . In this role he taught medical and dental students, developed educational materials and carried out research.

The pursuit of knowledge then took Scott and his young family to . As a professor of anatomy in the new Memorial University Medical School in Newfoundland Scott took on wide-ranging responsibilities as the program moved from a set of wooden huts to a fully-fledged tertiary care institution. As an educator Scott received many accolades for his work including several Teacher of the Year awards, the Silver Orator Award given by the graduating class and the President's Award for Distinguished Teaching given by the University.

Over the years at Memorial Scott accepted senior roles in development, delivery and management of Undergraduate Medical Education and research including Chair of Anatomy and Undergraduate Dean. In this latter role, he brought in many changes such as expanding the length of the clerkship, increasing and maintaining the rural teaching sites, extending the clerkship to New Brunswick and initiating computer-based instruction.

During this period Scott carried out laboratory research and trained graduate students with funding from the MRC, Kidney Foundation of Canada, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada and the pharmaceutical industry. In addition to bench research Scott also began research into medical education leading to the completion of a distance education Diploma in Medical Education through the University of Dundee.

When the opportunity arose Scott worked with Dr. Jim Rourke and others to develop a proposal for a Northern Ontario Medical School (NOSM). His theories were put into practice when he spent a year as the School's acting Campus Dean East. In this role he was responsible for curriculum development, faculty hiring, faculty development and accreditation. The experience at NOSM led Scott to carry out a study of the accreditation issues in distributed medical education, and into his current role as an independent Consultant in Medical Education and Honorary Research Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University.
