Collaborations

I have a joint appointment between Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and the Faculty of Engineering; my work interfaces with these two Faculties. In view of this I have fostered active collaboration with many researchers here at Western University, including Paul Charpentier, Jeff Dixon, Kibret Mequanint and Doug Hamilton. The interdisciplinary nature of my work necessitates that some experiments are conducted in the laboratories of these collaborators. For example,

  • Paul Charpentier’s supercritical fluid facilities to synthesize biomaterials
  • collaborate with Kibret Mequanint to take advantage of his polymer expertise
  • the great majority of biological work dealing with cell/biomaterials interaction is conducted in Jeff Dixon’s and Doug Hamilton’s laboratories
I have also established collaboration in the international level specifically with the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. In March 2009, an exchange PhD student (S.P. Passos) conducted research in my lab for a year under my supervision. I was also invited to Brazil to give a keynote speech at the 5th Meeting of the 'Brazilian group of Recycling in Prosthodontics and Implants' in April 2011. This was the start of collaboration between the University of Sao Paulo and Western University.  In 2011, I supervised another visiting PhD student from the University of Sao Paulo (Vinicius Bianco) for one year. This research project dealt with the development of machinable glass-ceramics for CEREC applications. I have also established international collaboration with Dr. Nazanin Emami, Associate Professor, Luleå University of Technology, Sweden.  Dr. Emami visited our lab from June to August 2012, to work on collaborative studies of cellular interactions with biomaterials.
