Profile
Born and raised in Russian Federation. Graduated 1st Moscow Medical Institute (now 1st Moscow State Medical University) in Internal Medicine, followed by the Neurology residency at the National Institute of Neurology (now Neurology Research Center). Worked as staff neurologist at the same institution, obtaining additional training in vascular ultrasound. Continued with studies in ultrasonography at Santa Barbara, California in 1991. Joined the Department of Neurology at University of Miami as Stroke Fellow in 1994, followed by relocation to Louisiana State University Medical Center as Faculty Instructor. Upon return to Moscow in 1997 worked as vascular neurologist and defended a Thesis in Neuroimaging (US/MRI-based caveats of carotid plaque composition and potential for embolism). Started clinical stroke fellowship in 1999 at University of Toronto, moved to UWO in 2002 to assume the position of the Senior Stroke fellow. Clinical work included acute thrombolysis and stroke prevention clinic. Research-wise, continued to work on pathophysiology of stroke with grants from American Heart Association and other agencies. As part of the Canadian Stroke Consortium has led the national study of cervical arterial dissections as co-PI. Served as STROKE Assistant Editor and later as STROKE CME Editor in 2005-2008. Publications, including book chapters, revolved around the main area of expertise – ischemic stroke pathophysiology and treatment. In 2009 following passing all the examinations in Canada, joined the Department of Psychiatry as a resident and later in 2014 as Assistant Professor, changing career paths. Past academic appointments included Clerkship Director (UGE) and Program director (PGE). Schulich Excellence in Education award in 2022. Clinical area of expertise: SPMI, neuropsychiatry. Primary academic interests: professional education in Medicine, eclectic psychotherapeutic approaches.
