Year 4
Year 4 Schulich Medicine Electives
The Department of Psychiatry at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, offers a range of services and elective choices. It also encompasses many approaches to psychiatric problems including biological, psychotherapeutic and community orientations. Students will be expected to become fully integrated into their service for the duration of the clinical elective.Once the student has been informed of his or her clinical elective period (after the results of the medical school lottery have been published and the add/drop period has ended), he or she should, as soon as possible, finalize arrangements for any electives in psychiatry. It is important that making arrangements for an elective setting, supervisor, etc., is not left until the last moment. The UGE (Undergraduate Education) coordinator and administrator must be informed of all electives that are arranged; whether arranged on your own, or through the UGE office. Students are encouraged to call the Clerkship and Electives coordinator to arrange an appointment to review their goals and objectives to help them acquire appropriate placements.
Clinical electives can be arranged for students in most areas of psychiatry. A list of the available Clinical Programs can be found here. Electives may be two or four weeks in length in the following choices. Please note that these experiences may not be available in all blocks.
Locations include London Health Sciences Centre, Children’s Hospital, Parkwood Institute Mental Health Care Building, CPRI (Child and Parent Resource Institute), Madame Vanier Centre, Southwest Centre for Forensic Mental Health Care, or other institutions associated with the University of Western Ontario (eg. Stratford General Hospital and Chatham-Kent Health Alliance).
