Dr. Reiss was recruited to London as a Full Professor in 2008, to leadership positions within the University and Hospital structures, ultimately leading to taking on the University Department Chair and LHSC/SJHC Department Chief roles in 2017.

Previously, he was the Medical Program Head of General Psychiatry in Winnipeg at the Health Sciences Centre (HSC) and University of Manitoba (UM), where he also was a Full Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Radiology. Additional responsibilities entailed being the Director of the UM Psychiatric Neuroimaging Program, UM Dept. of Psychiatry Director of Information and Technology, and leading Medical Standards/Quality Improvement for the HSC Dept. of Psychiatry and Winnipeg Regional Health Authority Mental Health Program. He was also awarded Affiliate Scientist status within the National Research Council of Canada – Institute for Biodiagnostics.

Throughout his academic career, he has been a ‘clinician generalist’, advocating and utilizing both psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic modalities, but also with special interests in Sexual Dysfunctions, Schizophrenia, and Emergency Psychiatry. He similarly maintained an interest in all aspects of medical education, at various times holding leadership positions in UGME, PGME, and CPD. His early career research was in Psychoneuroendocrinology, completing a MSc degree in the area. Mid-career his research first shifted to the field of Psychopharmacology with extensive involvement as a Principal Investigator clinical trialist, and then later additionally involving neuroimaging research, primarily utilizing fMRI techniques in studying general and emotional cognition. His later career research interests upon relocating to London, primarily have been in Health Systems, complimenting his leadership role in clinical development and innovation, as well as the selective continuation of some of his previous work, in conjunction with being an Associate Scientist of the Lawson Health Research Institute.

Throughout his career, Dr. Reiss has been active in a variety of medical leadership roles. These have been academically within university structures, clinically in hospitals and provincial health regions, as well as at the Provincial and National Professional Association levels, including the Canadian and American Psychiatric Associations and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. In recognition of his contributions to academia, clinical innovation, and medical leadership, he was elected to Distinguished Fellowship status in the American Psychiatric Association in 2007, and similarly awarded Distinguished Fellowship status within the Canadian Psychiatric Association in 2012.

Following his Cancer diagnosis and treatment, Dr. Reiss scaled back his engagement in clinical duties in 2018 and has since enjoyed a more limited role formally and informally mentoring aspiring medical leaders and facilitating colleagues’ research activities through reviewing, coaching and selective co-investigation.
