  2. Understand the neurobiological and psycho social underpinnings of headaches and mental illness.
  3. Apply the treatment strategies and interventions for management of headaches and mental illness in their clinical practice.

Objectives:
Morning Keynote: Neurobiology of Headaches - Dr. Paul Cooper
  • Explain to a patient the pathophysiology of migraine.
  • Identify source materials for assistance in the diagnosis of headache disorders.
Afternoon Plenary: Childhood Headaches: The Mind Body Connection - Dr. Sephideh Taheri
  • Review evidence for mind-body-spirit connection in etiology of headache disorders in children and adolescents.
  • Examine evidence-based behavioural, integrative and complementary therapies.
Workshop Session 1: Migraine Therapies: Past, Present and Future - Dr. Paul Cooper
  • Identify two migraine-specific therapeutic agents for the acute treatment of migraine
  • Identify the mechanism of action of two migraine-specific prophylactic agents and be able to indicate when they should be used.
Workshop Session 2: An Integrated Approach to Management of Headaches and Mental Illness - Dr. Varinder Dua
  • Describe the different classes of headaches
  • How substance abuse contributes or causes headache in the intoxication and withdrawl states
  • Management of headache in light of comorbid substance use disorder.
Workshop Session 3: Management of Substance Use and Headahces - Dr. Janel Gracy
  • Describe the different classes of headaches.
  • How substance abuse contributes or causes headache in the intoxication and withdrawl states.
  • Management of headache in light of comorbid substance use disorder.
Workshop Session 4: Practical Approaches to Management of Headaches in Children - Dr. Sephideh Taheri
  • Obtain an appreciation of epidemiology of childhood headache disorders and their pathophysiology.
  • Review evidence-based therapies and future research directions.
Workshop Session 5: Headaches and Exposure to Environmental Toxins/Occupational Exposure - Dr. Sidney Siu
  • At the end of the presentation, the audience will learn the three essential components of an occupational/environmental exposure and health effects:
    • the Agent,
    • the Route of exposure,
    • the Host Response
Workshop Session 6: Management of Post Traumatic Headahces - Dr. Keith Sequiera
  • Differentiate between different headache types
  • Discuss pros/cons to various oral and injectiable opinions
  • Pragmatic case based discussion to solidify information.
