Alumni Updates

Alumni from the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery are doing great things in their careers, enjoying life and having fun with family, friends, travel and more. Catch up with Doug Angel, Patrick Gullane, Mark Raymond, Hatim Shawli and so many others.

Patrick Gullane, 1975

Patrick remains remarkably proud of his alma mater and continues to profile it with each opportunity. Since completion of my residency in 1975, fellowships in the U.S. and four years on Faculty of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, he has earned numerous awards for his contributions to the field of Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstruction, including an appointment as a Member of the Order of Canada in 2010, and a Member of the Order of Ontario in February 2015. Additionally, he received three honorary fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons of Australia, Royal College of Surgeons of England and Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland.

Dr. Alex Marsh, 1984

The past two years have been filled with many life changes for Alex’s family. Alex had to discontinue practice in Owen Sound, after 30 years of service, due to health reasons. In June of 2017, Alex and Deborah moved to London to be closer to family and medical support. This past January their daughter, Kirsten, was married at Bellemere Winery. She is a nurse and living in Melbourne, Australia with her husband Matthew who is a teacher. It is Alex’s hope that they will be able to attend Resident’s Day and renew old acquaintances.

Greg Chernoff, 1992

Greg is still loving what he does with offices in Santa Rosa, CA, Indianapolis, IN, and Xian, China. Along with Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, he has the Foundation for Survivors of Violence and The Center for Cellular Medicine, Regenerative and Stem Cell Therapy. My daughter Emily is now in College. Everyone is always welcome to visit.

Rob Ballagh, 1993

It has been 25 years since Dr. Rob Ballagh completed the program. He has a very busy general ENT practice in Barrie with a focus on otology. He and his wife Margot, who just completed two terms/five years under two Prime Ministers in Ottawa creating and running the Social Security Tribunal of Canada, are building a home in Port Sydney, Muskoka, this year. Amongst his many other hobbies, he keeps up with his visual art as can be seen from his self-portrait.

Hatim Shawli, 1999

During the past couple of years, Hatim got married and was appointed as an Associate Professor at the University of Jeddah.

Mark Taylor, 2000

Mark Taylor is Professor and Head of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Dalhousie University. He has served in various administrative roles including President of the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, the CSO Fund, the Canadian Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the Canadian Association of Head and Neck Surgical Oncologists and the Eastern Canadian Otolaryngology Society. He currently represents Canada on the Board of the International Federation of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgical Societies and in 2016 was elected to the Collegium Oto-Rhino-Laryngologicum Amicitiae Sacrum. (CORLAS) He has lived in Halifax since 2001, with his wife Tammy and three daughters, two of whom have started university at Acadia and St. Francis Xavier with their youngest in grade 8.    

Marc Raymond, 2003

After graduation Marc moved back to the Barrie/Orillia area and worked with Greg Price-Jones. He moved to London and started a solo general ENT practices in Strathroy in 2005, and remains there today. Marc is still enjoying playing Sunday morning pickup hockey, and is now the Assistant Coach and Trainer on his son, Andrew is hockey teams. It has been unbelievably thrilling and personally rewarding for Marc to be involved in coaching kids hockey. Marc is now a fully licensed, race car driver. This summer, he is competing in the Canadian Touring Car Championship with SCB Racing.

Jason Atlas, 2004

Jason Atlas has a busy general ENT practice in Etobicoke. He enjoys time with his family and sports of all types. He coaches his son Nathaniel's hockey team and this winter he went skiing in Vermont with his family. 

Matthew Bromwich, 2007

Matthew is approaching the end of his ninth year in practice at CHEO, where they just added a fourth full-time surgeon. His practice focuses on airway and ear surgery and his research focus is on medical technology. This fall he participated in a medical mission in Peru delivering hearing testing to 2,500 children in one week. He spoke about this and the importance of hearing in the development of new technology at his TED talk in New York this past January. He and his wife Rebecca, look forward to the challenges that four teenage kids will be sure to bring over the next few years.

Mohamed Mohamed, 2011

In 2013, Mohamed took a position as head of surgical department in Lloydminster hospitals. He’s on the teaching staff at University of Alberta. And he’s very happy with his very busy practice.

Leigh Sowerby, 2011

Leigh Sowerby had a baby September 11, 2017. Her name is Evie Ruth Sowerby.

Doug Angel, 2013

Doug's daughter, Madelyn Reilly Angel was born August 28, 2017. Doug is also now playing in a country band called the 8 Track Favourites and involved more than ever in the music community in town. He hopes all are well and hopes to see everyone soon.

Justin Poirier, 2013

Justin Poirier has a very busy general ENT practice in Grand Falls, NL with a high skin cancer component. His little boy Oliver just turned two and is a ball of energy. His wife Julie is back to work and enjoying central Newfoundland. When not spending time at work or with family, he is playing trumpet in a local concert band and local big/jazz band.

Dr. Brandon Wickens, 2014

Brandon, Courtney and Emma Wickens welcomed Brynn into the family in November 2017.

Jordan Glicksman, 2016

Jordan Glicksman finished his fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania in Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery. He and his wife Jacqueline have moved back to Boston where he is an associate in a private practice. He spends a lot of his free time in the summer at Fenway Park.

Chandheeb Rajakumar, 2017

It’s been a tumultuous but fun year since finishing residency. Chandheeb's practice is in full swing and my family and he loves the west coast and is settling into his new home in British Columbia nicely.
