Congratulations: Alumni Award of Excellence – Professional Achievement Awardee Announced

The Department of Oncology and the Centre for Translational Cancer Research would like to congratulate Dr. Muriel Brackstone on receiving the Schulich Alumni of Distinction Award – Professional Achievement Award - Medicine.

Dr. Muriel Brackstone, MD ’99, Resident Alumna ’04, MSc’08, PhD’16 is a professor in the Departments of Surgery, and Oncology as well as an associate scientist at the Lawson Health Research Institute at Western University, St. Josephs Healthcare and London Health Sciences Centre. Dr. Brackstone is currently the city-wide Chair/Chief of Surgery.

Dr. Brackstone’s accomplishments are many to date. She established London’s Breast Care Program and has served as its founding medical director since 2019. She also co-founded the Gender, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office for the Department of Surgery and founded the Women in Surgery group for female clinical academics at Western University. Co-founding the first Canada-wide hands-on oncoplastic cadaver course to train surgeons in breast oncoplastic surgery and developing a unique fellowship program in breast surgical oncology can be added to her list of achievements. This program is one of the few of its kind in the world. Furthermore, Dr. Brackstone created an innovative international virtual training program in breast oncoplastic surgery.

Dr. Brackstone is the lead author on several international guidelines on how to treat breast cancer and is the lead author of the Ontario Health Cancer Guidelines. She is an executive of the Canadian Clinical Trials Group which helps determine which clinical trials should be conducted in breast cancer Canada-wide.
