Scent-Free Policy
The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry is raising awareness with all staff, faculty and students about the use of scents and fragrances.
Scents have been known to cause irritation of the eyes, throat and nose for some individuals with allergies, asthma and other respiratory conditions. They can also cause health effects such as dizziness, headaches, skin irritation, fatigue and other symptoms for some people. Individuals situated within hospitals will be well aware of scent-free policies. We encourage everyone to promote a scent-free environment across the School.
Some common sources of scents
- Perfumes/cologne
- Cleaning and other chemicals
- Hair spray and other hair/personal care products
- Creams and lotions
- Air fresheners
- Hand sanitizer
What can you do?
- Be sensible about scents: Limit use in common areas such as offices, meeting rooms, libraries, classrooms, labs and restrooms.
- Keep it clean and clear: Consider using scent-free cleaning products and personal care items. Leave the heavy-scented personal products for home.
- Be aware we share the air: Respect the rights of others to breathe easy. You may have to be flexible to adjust to the needs of your colleagues.
