Upcoming Talk on Dr. O, London’s first indigenous physician
Do you know about the extraordinary life of Dr. Oronhyatekha (1841-1907), London’s first (Canada’s second) indigenous physician?
Born at Six Nations of the Grand River and rising to prominence in medicine and politics, he became embroiled in the controversial search for Tecumseh’s grave, lobbied for the vote for Indigenous peoples, and became the first non-white member and ultimately the Supreme Chief Ranger of the Independent Order of Foresters.
Professor Michelle Hamilton, co-author of the book Dr. O: Security, Justice, and Equality, will be talking about the life and legacy of Dr. Oronhyatekha on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Stevenson Hunt Room, Central Branch, London Public Library. All are welcome to attend.
Read “Meet Dr. O,” a recent article in The Londoner about Dr. O, his connection to London, and Professor Hamilton’s upcoming talk.
